Felipe Martins

March 2016

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Well, I had many dreams when I was young, but the biggest one was to be a marine biologist. I loved nature, especially marine life.

How did your friends/family react when you told them you wanted to be a model?
Not really well, especially my grandparents. They were a little worried about this career, and honestly I understand them. If you are not mentally ready for the fashion life, you will have big problems (healthy and psychological).  My mother supported me, she said it was a good opportunity to travel around the world (we didn't have money to do that by our own.

How long have you been modelling for?
My first agency was in 2010, so I have been working as a registered model for 6 years!

What has been your greatest accomplishment so far:
My greatest accomplishment wasn't in fashion. It was my recovery for my shoulder surgery, I had an accident and lost all arm movement. I had to do 2 years of physiotherapy to recover, it was hard, but now I'm stronger!

Who inspires you in the industry?
Well, I'm big fan of suits,  elegant clothes....  In the world I'm inspired by Armani,  in Brasil by Ricardo Almeida.

What aspects of your job do you like best/least?
The best is the lack of routine,  you never get tired of your day or your city...you are always traveling, meeting new people, absorbing new cultures..that's what make us mature...
The hard part is being away from the people you love, but I know that's temporary... But I miss my family a lot..

Describe your style in terms of fashion:
During my week as a swimmer, I'm a sport guy, wearing tennis gear in the gym, not worrying about my hair or my clothes...
During the weekend,  or at parties I'm a classic man, I like to be elegant; my hair,  my suit, my shoes, everything must be perfect!

You are also a professional swimmer, tell us more about that:
I've been a swimmer since I was 14 years old, I always had problems with other sports, soccer, basketball, and others were hard for me. I went professional when I was 18 years old and nowadays I train twice a day/6 days a week. My goal now is to do make Olympic cut time for the 50m freestyle (I have to improve by 0,09s).

What makes you happy?
That's a hard question to answer...  What makes me happy is healthy and peace... The rest I can conquer with my hard work!

What is your favourite song at the moment, and of all time?
I was brought up listening U2! My parents were big fans of them! My dream is to watch a show live! My favorite song is "With or Without You"
What are some of your favourite books?

I'm very eclectic,  I read about everything, politics,  news, history,  wars, sports, dive..I'm very creative and that's makes my mind travel a lot...

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Sometimes I'm too happy, and I love to make jokes, (and) sometimes people gets offended...  And I feel bad afterwards!

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?
Don't worry about money, don't worry about career,  just do what you love and money and career will come automatically...
Describe yourself in 5 words:
Happy, playful, smart, responsible, dreamer.
Which living person do you admire most?

My mother, she lost my father and had a very strong cancer... She raised two kids alone! She is great!

What do you most value in people?
An open mind.

Name 2 things people don't know about you:
I'm afraid of the dark (big problems to sleep).
I have worked as a Bartender, waiter, lifeguard, tourism guide, president of an association and others.

What is your motto?
"From adversity comes greatness" and  "It's not about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward..."
"live a life you will remember"

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Retired from swimming and modeling, working with something I love, healthy,  with a lovely wife.

Any advice for those wanting to become models?

Yeah, a lot!
- Work with good and respected agents.
- Shouldn't have "fashion" as your only income (at the beginning you won't make money with fashion)
- Don't take decisions thinking about money, in modeling creating an image is everything!
- Avoid parties and nightclubs with fashion people.

- Take care of your health!!!

What do you look forward to doing the most in 2016?
I'm looking forward to putting an end to my swimming career and doing something new...getting back on the road!!!

 Any last words?
... live your dream, follow your passion...

Also, Thank you very much for the opportunity!
