Bernardo Belmar

What did you want to become when you were a child?

I remember clearly the first thing I saw myself as was an “inventor”. I didn’t know how to call it, I just wanted to invent things. While my brother would ask for sports related things… I'd annoy my mother to get a chemistry set to play with!

How did your friends/family react when you told them you wanted to be a model?

Well… that never happened. You see… I went to Med School. But because of some family drama I had to work up until 5-6 am to earn money, I lived an hour from work, that left me most of the time with about an hour to sleep, then I had to go directly to the Hospital. So after 3 years of doing that I couldn’t keep up. Although the first year I was killing it! By the 3rd year I couldn’t perform as a med student. If you study medicine, that should be the only thing you are doing. It’s extremely demanding.

So by the 3rd year I couldn’t pay the increasing cost of University. They didn’t allow me anymore at the exams. And the opportunity came. I met some people that offered me to do a runway show for Chile Fashion week. Then I met some people at an agency. By that time my University career was crumbling. I wasn’t allowed into the exams and the modeling agency asked me if I wanted to travel as a model.
I didn’t really have an option. I couldn’t pay my studies so I left.

I figured I had no future in my country. I might as well see the world.

How long have you been modelling for?

Since I was 21, that makes it 9 years.

What has been your greatest accomplishment so far:

It might be daring to say this… But I’ve had a passion for knowledge since I’m a teenager. I’ve been studying ancient cultures and occult wisdom for about 15 years. Having the chance to travel the world worked perfectly with that passion of mine. I got to see other cultures and find extremely interesting people in my travels. Secretly writing experiences on my journals and learning. My greatest achievements are not on my modeling career. But in an spiritual level. Funny enough is through my mistakes, and tough times around the world that I can say I have a pretty good understanding of myself. Is there a higher achievement than that? For me… that’s the only way. By looking inward we get to know the universe say some wise men. And if when I die I can say that I got to know myself… then I have lived.

Who inspires you in the industry?

Mmm… you see… I'm a little unfamiliar with the industry. Im so bad with names :p And my inspiration in life comes from historical figures rather than contemporaries.

What aspects of your job do you like best/least?

By my Job you mean modeling? I wouldn’t consider it a Job. It’s something I get to do because I won some sort of genetic lottery. A job requires you to develop skills and put them to use.

I spend most of my time focusing on my studies and research. Which soon will bear fruit. I also had a startup but it went South due to a disagreement with the investor. I am participating in a few other startups and other businesses now too, but they are in early stages.
Of modeling, I love the traveling part, meeting new people and having free time to do dedicate to my passions. I don’t like that people expect you to be dumb as a model. And it is extremely hard to brake that preconception. As soon as people classify you as a model, they assume you don’t use your brain.

Describe your style in terms of fashion:

Im a 90s kid. I like jeans and leather jackets... And suits. I like suiting up.

I don’t know if that has a name… but that’s how you will see me most of the time.

What makes you happy?

Tough one … I find happiness in being on my own, and I find happiness on being with my friends. The unexpected, connecting the dots on my research! SELF IMPROVEMENT. It’s hard and it might even be painful. But to see what you are doing wrong, and see that you can actually become better.. that makes me happy.

What brings you the greatest satisfaction?

Smart conversations. Challenging opinions. LEARNING.

What is your favourite song at the moment, and of all time?

Uff… tough one. I use music as some sort of catalyst. There are songs for all sorts of themes. Right now im listening to a lot of Norse music since I’m studying their culture. But rock and blues has always been part of me. And it gives me strength. But sometimes in the lyrics of Celtic music it really, really moves my heart. The way they were connected to nature… my heart comes out of my chest.

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

“Listen to your heart. It’ll all make sense on time” I wish I had a copy of “Mastery” by Robert Greene.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

I'm a VERY sexual person. I take pleasure out of others people’s pleasure.

Describe yourself in 5 words:

KNOW WILL DARE KEEP-SILENT
Yeah maybe I cheated a little there. But those words contain wisdom. They are not my creation. But they are certainly one of my main Mottos together with PERDURABO (I will prevail)

Which living person do you admire most?

Out of the top of my head… Elon Musk.

What do you most value in people?

Loyalty. Honor.

Name 2 things people don't know about you:

1st . I’m an occultist.

2nd. I had a twin.

And if I may include a third.. I’m a geek and a nerd. I love technology and startups.

What is your motto?

I've got 3.

1 PERDURABO.

2 KNOW WILL DARE KEEP-SILENT.

3 TRUTH LOVE WILL.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

With the resources to be the person I wish I could have met when I needed.

Any advice for men wanting to become models?

Stoicism would do very well on the intellectual diet of any model. Research it. Use it.
Learn emotional intelligence. It will help you not only in your career, but in your life. Be at peace with your looks. There will always be someone better looking than you, but you are not the worse looking either. In the world of the appearances what will make the difference is not how you look. Cultivate yourself. Match your brain with your looks.

Any last words?

I guess I just want to thank you for giving me the chance to collaborate in this with you. I’m truly honored.
