What did you want to become when you were a child?
I wanted to be in Advertising for some reason.
How did your friends/family react when you told them you wanted to become a designer?
They were actually kind of upset— they loved my job when I was at Bergdorf Goodman as men’s fashion director and they couldn’t believe I’d ever leave that.
What I love about your collections is the fact that a man (of any age, size, ethnicity) can purchase a few pieces one season, and add to those pieces with each coming seasons. Your pieces seem timeless, there are influences of "trends" in your work, however, you seem to keep the "M.Bastian stamp"; is this a conscious decision?
Yes— It’s always got to feel like us no matter what the seasonal inspiration is
What have been your favorite looks (which you've created) over the years?
I really can’t pick a favorite— i’m always most in love with the last collection we’re showing.
What has been your greatest accomplishment so far?
Winning the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Menswear Designer of the Year in 2011.
What aspects of your job do you like best/least?
Best - Seeing guys on the street wearing my clothes
Least - The travelling
What makes you happy?
Being outside on a sunny day.

Jaws, Romy and Michelles High School Reunion, My Own Private Idaho
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Electronic cigarettes— I quit smoking a year and a half ago
What is your favorite song at the moment, and of all time?
