What did you want to become when you were a child?
Good. Good at something. Doing good for others. I always picked the "good" side, no matter what game I played.
Tell us why you do what you do:
Because it feels good, and feels like it matters.
How did your friends/family react when you told them you wanted to become an actor?
I didn't. It just happened. But I did make a decision to continue the lucky streak of roles I'd been winning by moving to L.A. in 2001. My mom said, "I don't care what you do, just get health insurance." That was that.
Were you ever bullied as a child? What were some of your coping mechanism?
Obviously, being singled out as deaf.
I'd go off somewhere and read. Or just get lost in the woods, or ride on my bike on my own for hours.
What has been your greatest accomplishment so far:
This is ongoing: learning to listen to my intuition. When I do it, beautiful things happen, and, in a way, my accomplishments grow from that one accomplishment.
Who inspires you?
My fellow Deaf thespians who do theatre because they love it. I am not enamored with Hollywood, because there is a disconnect between that life and the daily concerns of real people. Theatre is so much more real, to me.
What aspects of your job do you like best/least?
Dislikes: having to put myself out there to get work; dealing with ignorance.
Likes: meeting and spending time with some amazing people; doing things that matter; changing perceptions of and opening doors for the deaf people/performers who will come after me.
Describe your style in terms of fashion:
Laid back. I value comfort and utility over fashion.
What makes you happy?
Good meals and good conversation in good company.
What is your favorite song at the moment, and of all time?
Don't really have one, but I grew up on 80s music (anything with a strong/catchy beat/bassline was good).
What are some of your favorite movies?
Almost every fantasy/sci fi/adventure movie in the 80s/90s--notably: Star Wars, episodes IV-VI; the Indiana Jones series; Labyrinth; The Neverending Story; Goonies; among others.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Playing retro video games. Beating them over and over again.
Describe yourself in 5 words:
Five words is not enough.
Which living person do you admire most?
Right now? Or yesterday? Or tomorrow? I'm struggling with this question.
What do you most value in people?
Respect and caring for the world we live in, not just other people; because if you really cared about people, you'd care about the world they live in and depend on.
Name 3 things people don't know about you:
If I told them, they wouldn't be unknowns anymore.
What is your motto?
Never really thought about that one, but I guess it would probably be something like "live and let live."
Any last words?
This was hard, especially the questions you wanted me to be specific on.
