Juan Pablo di Pace

March 2015  - "Dallas", "A.D. The Bible Continues", "Mamma Mia!"

When you were a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?

I was convinced that's I would become a painter or an animator for Disney movies. I don't remember not drawing 10 hours a day since I was born. It was an obsession... My heros were Da Vinci and Michelangelo, so I had very few friends... :)

How did your friends/family react when you told them you wanted to be a actor?

My family was kind of surprised because they all thought I was going to pursue a graphic/artistic career... So when I called my parents and told them I wanted to act, they were like "oh... Ok... Ok... we are happy whatever you do". So I have to thank them for being that supportive.

Who inspires you in the industry?

The three living directors I mostly admire: David Lynch, Lars Von Trier and Pedro Almodovar.

What has been your greatest accomplishment so far:

I don't think I have reached my greatest accomplishment yet! There's so much more to do!!! I guess playing Jesus in A.D. was pretty high on the list. I'm very proud of that show and to have been given the freedom to do interpret him. I'll never forget being up in the cross, looking at the sky above and down at Jerusalem... Chilling moments.

What aspects of your job do you like best/least?

I love travelling to remote places I wouldn't visit otherwise. Experiencing the culture of the place and the differences. I love playing challenging  characters that teach me new things about myself. But above all, I love telling stories, so to be involved in a mini-world and see it come to life through film, tv or theatre.

What I like the least is the waiting, the uncertainty, the down times... I'm not great at doing nothing so I always have to come up with ways to keep creating even when I'm not on set. Like writing, directing, singing...

Describe your style in terms of fashion:

I love suits. I guess I've been inspired by British fashion a lot because I lived there for 10 years... So Very fitted suits, scruffy boots, slim jeans.... Also. A lot of t-shirts and track suit bottoms to be comfy!

What makes you happy?

Creating makes me happy. Rehearsing, practicing, writing, singing... Also I love to hike, to be with nature, in the water, spending time with my family in Spain and to holidaying with my friends... But give me a piece of paper and a pen and I could be the happiest person too, sketching away.

What brings you the greatest satisfaction?

To Learn a lesson that's been long overdue. Sometimes we fixate on things that go wrong and when you finally let go, at some point the clarity of it all makes itself known to you and it's like an "Aha!"moment. It's satisfying to know that you create everything that happens around you, good or bad.

What is your favourite song at the moment, and of all time?

At the moment my favorite song is "Listen" David Guetta/John Legend

My favourite song of all time "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson.

What are some of your favorite movies?

Mulholland Dr, The Piano, The Godfather 1, Kramer vs Kramer.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

Playing YouTube videos non-stop. One will take me to another and another and it's unstoppable... Having said that, sometimes it's amazing the stuff you find there.

Describe yourself in 5 words:

Tenacious. Private. Ridiculous. Picky. Generous.

Which living person do you admire most?

Björk

What do you most value in people?

I value honesty, humour, calmness, affection, perseverance and a bit of craziness. Also love people who want more, who are hungry to tell a point of view in a way that hasn't been attempted before.

Name 2 things people don't know about you:

I'm a high baritone. I'm a 5 minute cook.

What is your motto?

The only certainty in life is death, everything else is possible.

Any advice for those wanting to become actors?

Be really really really sure you want to be one! And once you do go for it with all your heart. Remember your love of acting before the love of attention or fame or notoriety.
